Where eagles dare... otherwise known as Rowville Salvos
I found this amazing batik material for $3.99 at the Rowville Salvos a week or so ago (have been a bit busy to take photos... as usual...). Actually it was less than $3.99 because it was in a bag with about 5 other big pieces of material... so more like under $1!! Not sure where it's from originally, Indonesia or Malaysia maybe?
The design is of eagles soaring over a middle ground of plants and then lots of little birds in the foreground down the bottom.
I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it, probably I'll make it into a wallhanging when I eventually get around to it... how cool is the design, although the eagles are a bit scary!

I. Don't. Like. It. Sorry.
Is the Rowville Salvo's a big store... I haven't been there before. Worth a trip?
That's beautiful, Nice find!
Well it depends where you live... it's a pretty big store so if you happen to be nearby it wouldn't hurt dropping in (seeing as I know you hang out in D'nong all the time, it probably wouldn't be too hard for you to just travel a few more minutes down Stud Road!)
What a sensational find, FD! I would have snapped it up at any price! Guess it's not everyone's cup of tea, but I'm a sucker for Asian fabrics of any kind. It would be interesting to know what it was originally intended for, FD. Do you know anyone with a Malaysian, Indonesian or even Indian background that you could ask?
I'll tell you why I don't like it. For a wedding gift, I got from an uncle (remaining nameless) a china eagle attacking a snake. (About 40 cm high.) Think Copperart. Think ugly. Think WTF? The eagle was in the same pose as yours. Think goneski.
hahaha Nessa... does Copperart even exist any more!? Gina E, I'm actually half Chinese - my dad's from Malaysia, but he would not have a CLUE about this sort of thing. There's something like 'true Dutch wax' written on the selvedge so I'm guessing it might be Indonesian given that Indonesia was colonised by the Dutch (I think?). Unless I'm way out and it was actually from somewhere in Africa.
I'm a sucker for Asian (or any) textiles too!!!
I have to say it is very you... ethnic/tribal-y. And yes, Indonesia was colonised by the Dutch :)
