I don't know much at all about antiques or china, but I've heard of Spode, and I imagine that vase is probably worth a lot more than $40. Some opshops (including the BSL where I work) will ask for experts advice if they get something donated that they think is valuable. Why give it away just because you are a charity shop? If you can raise a bit more more money for the charity by selling genuine antiques at higher prices (that are still lower than antique shops) - why not?
I really like it. And I read a quote from an antiques collector yesterday 'you only ever regret what you DON'T buy" ! Seriously though when I see things that are priced higher than my own internal opshop price barometer I usually give them a quick ebay search/google and if the price is similar/lower in the opshop and I love the item, I grab it.
I don't think I could spend that much on it!
